PHYSICAL THERAPIST BIO

Andy is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He later went on to Touro College to receive his Doctorate in Physical Therapy. During his undergraduate studies, Andy worked in the Brain Plasticity Lab, performing research with patients with cerebrovascular accidents. Utilizing transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and functional electric stimulation (FES), Andy was able to improve the quality of life of the future stroke population. More recently, Andy has been involved in the sports world, handling the medical tents at the New York City Marathon, Play Rugby and AVP (the professional beach volleyball circuit). Andy is certified to perform personalized blood flow restriction therapy via Owens Recovery and Myofascial Decompression (cupping) through CupTherapy. During his free time, Andy likes to remain active. His favorite activities and sports involve playing hockey, rock climbing and biking.

Lauren is the Clinical Director of SPEAR’s Tribeca location and a Certified Hand Therapist. Lauren moved to NYC in 2010, where she attended and graduated from Columbia University with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. At Columbia, Lauren was the APTA representative for Columbia’s PT program, attending student conclaves and actively participating in APTA events. Prior to graduate school, Lauren received her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from The University of Western Ontario, a small town outside of Toronto, her hometown. Lauren has most of her clinical experience in outpatient orthopaedics. With recent Hand Therapy exposure, Lauren hopes to become a Certified Hand Therapist. Along with hand experience, she loves to work with a variety of different patients, body parts,and injuries and is currently studying for her Certification in Orthopaedic Manual Therapy. Since joining the SPEAR team, she has also become more involved with Pelvic Floor and Chronic Pain patients, and has started teaching the Pelvicore class. After making the move to NYC, Lauren fell in love with the people and the city. She loves spending her free time visiting her family in Toronto, and housing all of her Canadian visitors. She was not active in sports throughout college, but did find her calling later in life when she started practicing Muay Thai, which she did until her move to NYC. Lauren likes to stay active, trying out new running routes around the city and taking salsa lessons in her neighborhood, as well as spending time enjoying what the city has to offer with her family and friends.

Sarah earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Stony Brook University. While at Stony Brook, Sarah was a graduate teaching assistant for undergraduate anatomy where she was able to share her passion and clinical knowledge with aspiring medical professionals. Sarah also traveled to Tanzania, Africa with fellow classmates on a physical therapy mission trip to provide services to underprivileged pediatric patients with neurological and orthopedic dysfunction. Prior to this, Sarah received her Bachelor’s of Education in Exercise and Sports Science, graduating summa cum laude, from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL. During her time at Alabama, Sarah interned with the athletic training staff assisting in the rehabilitation of Division 1 athletes. Sarah’s clinical experience includes acute care rehabilitation, outpatient orthopedics, pediatrics, aquatic therapy, and neurological rehabilitation. She also has a strong interest in injury prevention within the workplace and sports rehabilitation. Sarah hopes to aid in getting patients’ back to their prior level of function, performing their passions, through patient-centered rehabilitation. Growing up, she was surrounded by athletics as her three brothers were football and baseball players throughout high school and college. She was a volleyball player in high school. Seeing the importance of the recovery process after injury led to her desire to become a Physical Therapist. Today, Sarah enjoys exercising, exploring new places, spending time with friends and family, as well as cheering on the Crimson Tide!

Kathleen is a registered occupational therapist with a Masters of Occupational Therapy from Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. Kathleen completed her undergraduate at Quinnipiac University, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Health Science. At Quinnipiac, Kathleen was a member of the school’s Kickline Dance Team for 4 years and for 2 years was the chair of the Social Committee within the team. While at Quinnipiac University, Kathleen was able to spend 6 months in Cork City, Ireland studying abroad as well as 1 month backpacking around Europe. Kathleen has experience with various diagnosis including stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic surgeries and injuries, amputations and general debility. Kathleen has presented research at the 2016 ATOA conference on the subject of returning to work following a stroke. Kathleen loves being an occupational therapist because she loves to guide individuals towards independence. The relationship between therapist and patient is very important to Kathleen in order to create client-specific goals; she believes that this enhances the overall therapeutic benefit of OT. In her free time, Kathleen loves spending time with family and friends, dancing, traveling and doing DIY projects.

Tina earned her Bachelor of Science in Health Studies and her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Boston University. Tina has completed clinical rotations in acute care, outpatient orthopedic, and outpatient neurological settings in both New York and Boston. During her undergraduate career, she also interned at an outpatient orthopedic physiotherapy clinic in Australia. She has worked with a diverse patient population with a wide range of diagnoses of orthopedic, neurologic and vestibular origin. Throughout her clinical experiences in both outpatient and hospital settings, Tina has learned the importance of advocating for her patients as well as empowering her patients to be their own advocates. Tina strives to form positive relationships and create individualized treatment plans to help each patient reach his or her goals. Tina is continuing to seek out educational opportunities to further her ability to provide evidence-based, patient-centered care. Tina grew up in New York City and is excited to return back home to continue to cheer on her New York Yankees and New York Giants. Boston did not change her loyalties, that’s for sure! In her free time, Tina likes to stay active by running, taking spin classes and practicing yoga. She also enjoys traveling and spending time with friends and family.
