Kynaston Schultz earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Columbia University and her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Brigham Young University. While at Columbia, Kynaston took advanced courses in orthopedics, as well as specialized courses in performing arts, foot and ankle, wrist and hand, and women’s health. During her time at CUMC, Kynaston was able to implement an outreach program for the local elementary school focused on teaching anatomy, physiology, and obesity prevention. She helped coordinate and direct CancerFIT, an organization which provides free evidenced based exercise classes for cancer patients and survivors. She also participated in research with adolescent dancers and was able to present posters with her team at two national conferences. Kynaston’s interest in physical therapy stemmed from her background in performing arts. As a classically trained ballet dancer, she became passionate about injury prevention and helping others achieve success following her own injuries. She believes in empowering patients to achieve their goals. She uses her love of movement to help patients obtain positive movement experiences and ultimately return to doing what they love most. Through her clinical affiliation at Harkness Center for Dance Injuries, Kynaston gained experience treating performing artists, both adolescents and adults, backstage and in the clinic. Her other affiliations allowed her to work with a wide range of conditions in an adult population in both orthopedic and acute care settings. Outside of the clinic, Kynaston loves to dance, hike, cook, travel, and spend time with family and friends.

Andrea Bettini was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. While in high school, she practiced sports including tennis, volleyball, soccer, skiing, and swimming. At the age of 15, her father suffered an ACL tear while skiing and while she watched him go through the rehabilitation process, Andrea discovered a strong interest in physical therapy. Andrea moved to the USA when she was 18 years old and attended Texas A&M University-Commerce, earning a B.S. in Biology with a minor in Exercise Physiology. During this time, she worked as a laboratory instructor for the Biomechanics and Kinesiology courses and was exposed to VO2 maximal testing protocols, nutrition, and strength and conditioning. After graduation, Andrea moved to New York City to attend Physical Therapy school at Long Island University- Brooklyn. She obtained her Doctorate in Physical Therapy degree in May 2017. While in school, Andrea was exposed to outpatient orthopedics, vestibular rehabilitation, inpatient rehab and intensive care unit rehabilitation. She has also volunteered in the New York and Houston Marathons to help athletes recovered after finishing the race. Andrea’s clinical interests include orthopedics, sports rehabilitation and injury prevention, especially in young athletes. In the future, Andrea wants to create a program for injury prevention in teenage athletes. Her goal as a physical therapist is to provide patient-centered care to all individuals and help her patients return to playing sports and normal daily activities as quickly as possible. In her free time, Andrea enjoys staying physically active through CrossFit and walking around NYC. She also loves traveling, dining (especially ice cream), going to the beach, and spending time with friends and family.

Melanie Rocchio, PT, DPT

Melanie earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Hunter College where she graduated summa cum laude and received her Bachelor of Arts from SUNY Geneseo. While at Hunter, she presented a research project on Multiple Sclerosis at a national physical therapy conference held in Portland, Oregon. She also completed clinical affiliations in acute bedside care, adult neurological rehabilitation, and outpatient orthopedics. During her undergraduate career, Melanie was a member of the Geneseo women’s soccer team. Her interest in physical therapy was piqued after suffering from a season ending injury and undergoing rehabilitation. Since pursuing physical therapy, she continues to utilize both therapeutic exercise and manual therapy techniques throughout her treatments. She has taken multiple manual therapy courses through the Institute of Physical Art and Maitland-Australian Physiotherapy Seminars. Melanie values a holistic approach to treating patients and always strives to educate and empower her patients through the use of proper movement. Melanie stays active by running, hiking, playing soccer, and practicing Bikram yoga.

Phaeleau Cunneen is a native New Yorker, who was born and raised in Stuyvesant Town and went to Stuyvesant High School. After living in Hawaii for 10 years, he returned to New York and graduated with a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Touro College. Phaeleau worked at the Hospital for Special Surgery for 10 years, where he specialized in sports medicine and hand therapy, and is a Certified Hand Therapist. He was an adjunct professor for many years and has lectured at both Hunter College and Columbia University. He has presented at the APTA conference in Denver and collaborated with several physicians, and together they published an article in the Journal of Arthroplasty on total femur replacements. In addition to being a hand therapist, Phaeleau has an interest in treating running injuries and has lectured with the industry’s leading experts on this subject. Phaeleau himself ran the New York City Marathon in 2006. He has also lectured on and is passionate about ACL injury prevention in kids. When not working, Phaeleau is busy cheering on his daughter, who is on her school’s track and field team. He loves to hike, and is currently trying to hike all 46 peaks in the Adirondacks. He is on 40 for the moment. But not for long! He is an avid bicyclist, who has been bicycling in New York City for over 40 years.

Brett Warner graduated from Messiah College with a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Health Science, focusing on exercise physiology. He received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy degree from Drexel University, with honors. Throughout his college experience, Brett was heavily involved in research. He spent two years as the principal investigator of an extensive exercise physiology study, presenting his research at regional and national conferences. At Drexel, he performed and presented research on return-to-sport rehab. Brett pursued clinical affiliations across multiple settings. He addressed a wide variety of orthopedic conditions and sports injuries at outpatient clinics across PA. At the Penn State Hershey Medical Center, he gained experience treating level I trauma and post-operative individuals, ensuring safe and smooth discharge transitions. Brett had the privilege of spending his final affiliation providing prosthetic training to individuals in the greater Philadelphia area.

Austin Afshar is the Clinical Director of SPEAR’s Murray Hill location. Austin earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from New York University after obtaining his Bachelor’s degree in Natural Science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Austin is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. At a young age, Austin began training and competing in both short and long course swimming, as well as open water swimming. He continued his knack for the sport during his time at IUP where he participated as a member of the club swim team and water polo team. Austin has swam competitively throughout his life, but it was during his undergraduate years where he provided private lessons for children with special needs that fueled his passion to pursue a profession in Physical Therapy. Austin has treated an extremely diverse population, including post-operative and sports related injuries as well as neurological disorders. He previously worked at world renowned Moss Rehabilitation where he treated patients with neurological disorders ranging from cerebral vascular accidents, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, as well as treated patients in the intensive care unit. His work experience also consists of both outpatient orthopedic as well as outpatient neurological physical therapy. Austin believes in treating his patients through evidence based practice, as well as through utilization of education, manual therapy and therapeutic exercises. He hopes to help his patients obtain the best quality of life possible through improving their strength and functional mobility, allowing them to stay active and to continue to pursue the life they desire through meeting their personal goals. Austin continues to stay active through swimming, spinning, weight lifting, and running. He is adventurous in both trying unique foods and in his travels; he enjoys exploring new local restaurants and adding new destinations to his travel list.

Vince “Vinny” Palumbo earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Long Island University – Brooklyn. Prior to receiving his Doctorate, Vinny obtained his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Kean University, where he graduated magna cum laude. Throughout his academic career, Vinny spent time volunteering to help people with special needs play, exercise, and be active. Vinny’s passion for physical therapy grew from his love for weightlifting and bodybuilding. For years, Vinny worked as a personal trainer, working with athletes and people of all ages to help accomplish their goals. One of his greatest accomplishments was helping train a friend who swam for the 2017 New Jersey Special Olympics and the 2018 USA Special Olympics. Vinny’s friend went on to win one gold medal in NJ, and two gold medals nationally. Vinny completed his clinical affiliations in outpatient orthopedics, inpatient care, and pediatrics in the acute and intensive care settings; During his clinical rotations, Vinny focused his interest on the pediatric population as he observed the neonatal unit. While Vinny learned to treat a wide variety of conditions for patients of all ages, he hopes to work and continue furthering his skills in pediatric rehabilitation. Outside of the clinic, Vinny enjoys staying active with weightlifting, running, snowboarding, and playing sports at the park with friends. When not exercising, he enjoys relaxing at the beach, reading books, playing guitar, and finding all the best and biggest food the world has to offer.
