Joe Costello is the Clinical Director of SPEAR’s Midtown – West 57th Street location. He received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. Joe received his undergraduate degree in Biology with a minor in Business Administration from Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh, NY. While at MSMC, Joe was a member of the basketball team and helped start the school’s lacrosse program. He was named captain of the Blue Knights’ inaugural season. Joe started with SPEAR at the 44th Street location as a staff therapist. He was first exposed to physical therapy when he suffered from chronic shoulder injuries in high school sports. He developed a passion for PT as he worked to return to playing. His clinical experience includes orthopedic and sports rehab, extensive spine training from a challenging clinic in South Carolina, cardiac rehabilitation, oncology, and private care. Joe utilizes an individualized approach to tailor each treatment specifically for each patient with a focus on manual therapy. Joe has also taken courses in fascial movement taping and advances for the shoulder and knee to aid his patients’ recovery. In 2016, Joe was awarded certification as a Board Certified Sports Clinical Specialist from the American Physical Therapy Association. In his free time, Joe enjoys playing pickup basketball, attending sporting events, traveling, hanging with friends and family, and visiting the always beautiful Seneca Lake.

Kristen Markoe earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Hunter College in the Macaulay Honors College Program with academic honor, Magna Cum Laude. Kristen continued her education at Hunter College in the Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program with the highest academic honor of Summa Cum Laude. Kristen’s 3 year capstone project for Hunter College PT program, “Effects of Kinesiophobia on Length of Stay and Recovery Outcomes in Patients after Total Knee Arthroplasty in the Inpatient Rehabilitation Setting” was selected by the American Physical Therapy Association, as she presented her dissertation platform at the Combined Sections Meeting 2017. During Kristen’s schooling in the Physical Therapy program, she completed clinical rotations in multiple settings including NYU Langone Tisch Inpatient Acute Care Hospital, Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation Hospital, and outpatient orthopedic facilities including Cynergy Physical Therapy and Professional Physical Therapy. Kristen decided to further her experience in the field of Physical Therapy by receiving her certification as a Pilates Mat Instructor, completing the IPA’s Core First Strategies course, and becoming an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association. Kristen also volunteered for the spinal mobility program as a section leader providing physical therapy sessions to spinal cord injury patients. Throughout Kristen’s 7 years at Hunter College, she was a 4-year starter and captain for the Hunter College Women’s Basketball team. Kristen currently holds individual records including 2nd all-time in most career points for women’s basketball with 1,751 points and the first male or female player in the history of basketball at Hunter College to record over 1,000 rebounds (1,046 rebounds). Kristen was also named CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, CUNYAC Player of the Year, ECAC Player of the Year and Honorable Mention Academic All-American throughout her career. After playing for 4 years, Kristen joined the coaching staff and has been an Assistant Coach for the Hunter College Women’s Basketball team for 2 years. Kristen is heavily involved in player skill development and the team’s conditioning program; focusing on injury prevention through proper body mechanics in warm up techniques and strength/agility/stamina workouts to improve performance of the athletes. Throughout Kristen’s basketball career, she sustained multiple injuries including a dislocated shoulder, broken ankle and torn ACL, which required reconstructive surgery. Completing the rehabilitation process for each multiple injuries sparked Kristen’s interest in Physical Therapy. Kristen’s clinical interests include rehabilitating orthopedic and neurological disorders using clinical knowledge and experience, manual therapy techniques, and the most recent evidence to rehabilitate patients to their full functional potential providing an individualized and positive experience throughout their recovery. As an avid sports enthusiast, Kristen watches all sporting events in her spare time and continues to stay active by training for and completing half marathons, Spartan obstacle course races and playing basketball with her best friends.

Aaron Kraus, PT, DPT, ATC

Aaron Kraus earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy and his Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from Stony Brook University. During his time as a Doctorate student, he was selected to be a student liaison and interviewer for applicant’s entering the Physical Therapy program. As an undergraduate, Aaron was heavily involved with the sports medicine department at Stony Brook University, providing Athletic Training services during on-site football for two semesters. Additionally, he spent a semester at St. Joseph’s College and Longwood High School sports programs. Aaron graduated from the Athletic Training program with honors, and was inducted into the Iota Tau Alpha Honor Society. Aaron has been an avid athlete throughout his life, participating in competitive soccer from the age of five to varsity level in high school. Later, he took an interest in extreme sports such as skateboarding, snowboarding and water skiing. Aaron has even attended the notable extreme sports camp, ‘Woodward’, where he spent most of his summers during his teenage years. Being involved in such demanding sports helped spark an interest in the medical field. It was as early as junior year of high school that Aaron showed a curiosity in Physical Therapy. Aaron’s clinical experiences include a variety of inpatient and outpatient orthopedic and sports medicine affiliations. These affiliations helped expand his knowledge in both orthopedic and neurological rehabilitation. Aaron has gained 1,500 hours of Athletic Training experience at the Division I level, including a range of multi-level athletes. Aaron also has three years’ experience in the wellness/fitness industry, working for Equinox Fitness as a personal trainer. He also gained valuable experience at a start-up company as a clinical exercise specialist for patients with risk factors for heart disease and diabetes. Through these opportunities, Aaron worked alongside an array of medical professionals, including internists, cardiologists, nurses, nutritionists and licensed social workers. Aaron continues to have a passion for music, and has enjoyed DJing for over 15 years. He also enjoys traveling, which fuels an interest in cooking ethnic foods, as well as being with the company of his friends.

Juan Correa received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy, Masters in Anatomy and Clinical Health, and Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training from the University of Delaware. As an athletic trainer, Juan brings his experience in sports medicine from the collegiate and high school levels to SPEAR. Juan’s interest in physical therapy began as a high school athlete after attending physical therapy as a patient. During his rehabilitation, he interacted with many healthcare professionals, but the hospitality and hands-on care from his physical therapist always stood out to him during his recovery. He looks forward to a career in physical therapy and the opportunity to connect with his patients and leave an impact on their lives both in and out of the clinic. Juan’s background in the healthcare field includes over 1,500 hours in athletic training as a student in the University of Delaware’s football, track and field, soccer, and softball teams, and later as the head athletic trainer at Rising Sun High School in Rising Sun, Maryland. As a rehab aide, Juan trained and served as a medical interpreter for his clinic’s Spanish-speaking patients and the physical therapists. Juan’s clinical experience in physical therapy includes sports and orthopedic injuries, as well as neurological and geriatric rehabilitation. He also has experience in the acute rehabilitation hospital and medical ICU settings. As a therapist, Juan’s interests lie in orthopedic and neurological rehabilitation that uses manual therapy, individualized care, and evidenced-based practice. In his spare time, Juan likes to play and watch soccer, go to the gym, play video games, and spend time with his loved ones. As a big foodie, Juan also likes to eat and cook adventurous food and looks forward to all of the calories NYC has to offer.

Donald Zerio received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from The University of St Augustine in Miami, Florida. Don earned his undergraduate degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Sport Nutrition from University of Connecticut in Storrs, Connecticut. He grew up playing various sports including swimming, diving, and baseball. Don developed a passion for resistance training and enjoys rehabilitating gym and sports-related injuries, as well as tendon pathologies and post-surgical cases. He uses his experience as a personal trainer to develop unique and individualized exercise programs for his patients. Don assisted in starting SPEAR’s Transitional Care service and was originally a rehab technician at the 84th Street and 57th Street locations prior to attending physical therapy school. In his free time, Don enjoys strength training, hiking, golfing, and cooking. He loves playing all types of intramural sports, his favorite position being the center fielder for his Central Park Softball team, Slug Lyfe.

Cydni Matsuoka, PT, DPT, CSCS

Cydni Matsuoka earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from New York Medical College, where she was inducted into the Alpha Eta National Honor Society. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Her clinical experiences include orthopedics, sports rehabilitation, and neurological rehabilitation. Cydni is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist who completed a year-long Sports Physical Therapy residency program in California to further her knowledge and clinical skills treating athletes of all levels, including professional, collegiate, high school, and weekend warriors. During her residency program, she served as one of the primary physical therapists for California State University Sacramento athletes and assisted with rehab for the United Soccer League’s Sacramento Republic FC. Cydni grew up in Sacramento, California where she played many sports including basketball, volleyball, soccer, and tennis. She was a 4-year starter and captain for the Vassar College Women’s Basketball team, where she became a 2-time All-American, 2-time ECAC Upstate Player of the Year, and 2011 National Rookie of the Year. Her senior season she led the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (47.8%) and free throw percentage (93.6%) for NCAA Division III. Her clinical interests include treating all orthopedic and sports injuries through a combination of therapeutic exercise, manual techniques, and movement education that best fit the individual needs of the patient. She has a particular interest in post-operative rehab including, but not limited to, patients who have undergone surgical procedures such as ACL, meniscus, MPFL, Rotator Cuff, Labral, and Achilles repairs. She believes that creating an environment where patients feel comfortable and have fun during rehab enhances the recovery process. In her free time, Cydni enjoys playing and watching basketball, training for Spartan Races, and exploring good eats in NYC.

Gary Heller is a Physical therapist at SPEAR’s W 57th location. He earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy with honors from the University of Miami and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Tulane University. His clinical experience includes orthopedics, sports rehabilitation and acute care. Gary enjoys treating patients throughout their lifespan with special interests in treating patients with low back and cervical pain. He believes empowering his patients with knowledge, utilizing evidence based treatment and open communication are essential to his practice. Gary grew up in New Jersey and later spent a number of years in New Orleans where he explored first-line trauma care as a volunteer EMT. He enjoyed the critical thinking required along with his introduction into the health care field. Gary attributes his initial interest in physical therapy from spending significant time in the university anatomy lab and rehab department with his kinesiology professor. When he is not in the clinic Gary enjoys playing tennis, soccer, cooking, skiing and spending time with friends and family.

Elaine received her Master’s in Occupational Therapy at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. At Quinnipiac, Elaine was a member of the school’s Kickline Team for four years and was captain of her team for two consecutive years. Elaine has experience treating children aged 9 months to 4 and half years old with varying diagnoses including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorder, and overall developmental delays. Additionally she has experience treating various diagnoses of the hand and wrist with training in custom fabricated splinting, and also has significant experience working with patients who recently underwent shoulder surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery. Elaine is dedicated to her patients’ rehabilitation process and continuously focuses on improving her patients’ ability to be as independent as possible. She is passionate about helping others and promoting success to regain function. Elaine has danced her whole life. She enjoys traveling, maintaining an active lifestyle, and spending time with her family and friends. She is certified in scuba diving and hopes to expand the values of occupational therapy to other countries in the world.

Mary Frances earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from South College and her Bachelor of Science in Dance and Arts Management from Oklahoma City University. Her clinical experience includes orthopedics, performing arts rehabilitation, and neuro-rehabilitation. During her time at Oklahoma City University, she performed both on and off stage with the American Spirit Dance Company. This experience provided her the understanding of what it takes to be a professional dancer and manager in the entertainment industry. Her goal is to educate instructors, managers, and performers on the demands of the dancer’s body and instill longevity into each individual’s professional career. Mary Frances aims to help every patient find that same joy in movement, while also assisting them to set up goals for a return to an active lifestyle. In her free time, Mary Frances enjoys taking dance classes, seeing Broadway shows, and spending time outside with friends and family.

Brittany received her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from New York University and her Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from Penn State University. She is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Brittany was born and raised in New Jersey where she was a competitive dancer. Two knee injuries which resulted in surgeries, sparked her passion for orthopedic and sports medicine rehabilitation. She has extensive clinical experience in the treatment of sports injuries including movement dysfunctions and post-operative orthopedic procedures. Her experience includes acute in-patient as well as outpatient care. In addition, Brittany has a broad base of clinical experiences including pediatrics, vestibular therapy, and cardiac rehabilitation. Her primary goal is the successful recovery of her patients. Brittany recognizes the importance of providing her patients the education and tools to prevent future injuries. She believes that communication between therapist and patient is the key to effective treatment. When she is not at the clinic, Brittany loves to experience all that New York has to offer. You can often find her jogging through Central Park, across the Brooklyn Bridge, or participating in various charity events including Cycle for Survival and the Parkinson’s Unity Walk. Her favorite weekend afternoons are spent strolling through local street fairs to experience the cultural diversity of the city. Brittany is an avid amateur cook and loves to spend time entertaining her family and friends.

Although Jennifer is originally from Chicago, IL, she grew up living in Michigan, New Jersey, and England. Growing up playing field hockey and lacrosse, Jennifer’s interest in physical therapy began with an admiration of her high school’s athletic trainer. Although never injuring herself, Jennifer became intrigued by everything related to sports and the rehabilitation process. While working as a rehabilitation aide during her undergraduate years, Jennifer got a glimpse of the profound impact physical therapy can have on an individual. Her clinical experiences include acute inpatient, sports orthopedics, and outpatient neurological rehabilitation. Jennifer believes well-rounded care incorporates manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, and patient education to avoid re-injury. She looks forward to a career of personalized patient care to help others rehabilitate to achieve their individual goals in and out of the clinic. In her free time, Jennifer enjoys trying new workout classes, traveling, and watching sports. She values taking advantage of the outdoors and spending time with friends and family.
